Cadillac's Driver Assist Package Offers Virtual Safety

The key role of a bumper is to absorb shock from an accident and reduce damage to the body of the car. Cadillac is saying that isn’t good enough and they want to prevent accidents from happening at all. Cadillac’s Front and Rear Automatic Braking system, which acts as a “virtual bumper,” may prevent you from backing into that mailbox or hitting a car when attempting to parallel park.

As part of an optional Driver Assist Package for the ATS, XTS and SRX sedans and crossovers, Cadillac’s new virtual bumper technology relies on a series of sensors. Radar, camera and ultrasonic sensors detect a possible upcoming crash. If the system detects an oncoming frontal collision, an automatic maximum braking effort is applied with or without your participation. So technically, you could avoid a low-speed accident while asleep, although it’s not recommended you try that.

The system also performs while the vehicle is in reverse. If the sensors detect an object behind the car, the brakes are automatically applied. You can over-ride the system by pressing the accelerator after the vehicle comes to a complete stop. This technology can potentially prevent numerous low-speed parking lot fender benders as well as save money and headaches on insurance claims.

Before automatic braking occurs, you are warned by both visual and audio alerts. One alert is located on the instrument panel and shows the relative proximity to any object in front of or behind the car. If that’s not enough to draw your attention to possible danger, a tactile warning is issued in the form of a buzzing seat. Cadillac’s Safety Alert Seat sends a buzz to the driver’s seat. If that doesn’t get your attention, what will? If you ignore any of these warnings, the Automatic Front and Rear Braking system applies the brakes.

Performance and Premium trim models of ATS, XTS and SRX are the only models eligible for the optional Driver Assist Package. The package also includes a blind zone alert and adaptive cruise control functions. XTS models with the Driver Assist package are also equipped with Cadillac’s Safety Alert Seat.
