Mini Looking At Crossover And Sports Car

A Mini sports car? That sounds about as likely as a Mini SUV - so they'll both probably happen. In fact, Mini and parent company BMW are considering both SUV and sports car models, according to a new report. The potential additions could help grow Mini's line to a total of 10 cars.

Inside Line reports that Mini is thinking about a small sports car in the vein of a Mazda MX-5 Miata. It's not clear if the car would be a roadster or hard-top, and it's not clear how you can make a Mini look sporty, but the automaker shouldn't have too much of a problem tuning its tiny packages for sporty handling.

Sure to be controversial, the Mini small SUV would take "Mini" to bigger places, sitting above the Countryman crossover, already criticized for being the antithesis of what Mini is all about. Mini has taken the criticism on the chin and enjoyed successful sales of the Countryman, which IL reports makes up nearly a third of its global sales.

"A lot of customers would like to stay with the brand when they need something bigger, and a Volvo or a BMW will not do," recently added Mini board member Harald Kreuger told the site.

As counterintuitive as a Mini SUV might seem, Kreuger makes a point. There are only so many buyers willing to drive a tiny subcompact, and even those buyers may eventually require something bigger.

This isn't the first we've heard of a bigger Mini. An Autocar report in the summer had Mini planning a more hardcore Countryman SUV and a people mover. Around that same time frame, the brand itself announced the commercial-market Clubvan.

Mini's next moves may make it less "mini," but it is also considering a small hatchback sized below the Cooper - so at least Mini traditionalists have something to grasp onto.

A new sedan model is also under consideration.
