Pagani Huayra To Make Its US Debut Next Year

If Pagani had its way, it would already be selling its Huayra supercar in the United States. It planned to launch the car this year, but those best laid plans were foiled by a pesky, little government body called the NHTSA. Due to a problem with the lack of child-safe advanced airbags, the NHTSA sent Pagani back to engineering, delaying the launch of the Huayra. While "child safety" probably seemed like an odd concern in a 230-mph two-seat supercar that certainly won't be the chariot of choice for many soccer games or PTA meetings, Pagani had no choice but to obey and delay.

Wealthy Americans anxious to wrap their fingers around the Huayra's steering wheel won't have to wait much longer. Pagani announced this week that the Huayra will make it to market by the middle of next year.

Horacio Pagani said: "The welcome we have received by the American audience and car enthusiasts in 2011 made us eager to return (to Pebble Beach) in 2012 with an even stronger presence and we cannot wait to see the first U.S.-spec Pagani Huayra on North American soil in mid-2013."

The Huayra may not be for sale here, but as Pagani mentions, it has made its way to US turf. Pagani showed the car at both the 2011 and 2012 Concours d'Elegance Pebble Beach events.

The Huayra debuted last year, and once everyone learned how to properly pronounce the name, it became quite a hot topic of conversation. The dramatic sports car is powered by a bi-turbo 700-hp 6.0-liter V-12 engine (730 hp in Sport tune) built by Mercedes' AMG division.

Once Pagani clears the NHTSA's last hurdles and gets the car onto market, the Huayra will be its first car sold in the United States. The Zonda never made it to US market because of - you guessed it - safety regulations. Pagani previously announced that Auto Gallery of Beverly Hills and San Francisco's British Motor Cars will be among the dealerships offering the Huayra. The car is expected to cost upwards of $1 million.
