Renault Alpine 110-50 Concept Faces Its Predecessor (Video)
A new Renault video features an intriguing competition among three generations of 'Alpine'. The youngest - the Alpine A110-50 - takes on the original Alpine A110 that it was designed in honor of, and both cars battle the very first "Alpine" i.e. the French Alps.
Renault built the Alpine A110-50 in celebration of the A110 Berlinette's 50th anniversary. It introduced the concept in the spring at the 2012 Monaco Grand Prix. The concept reinterprets the classic A110 in a more modern way, blending in some of Renault's latest design language originally seen on the DeZir concept.
Taking the wheel of the A110-50 is former rally car driver Jean Ragnotti. And his competition: Jean Ragnotti, younger version. You see, to emphasize the lineage of the car, Renault sets it up as Ragnotti circa 1962 racing the A110 against current Ragnotti and the A110-50.
Now we all know what should happen. The A110-50 and its 400-hp 3.5-liter V-6 engine should leave the much more modestly powered A110 at the starting line. The race should be over before it hardly begins. But, given that it's more of a production than an actual race, nostalgia could very well supersede physics and authenticity, leaving the door open for an A110 victory.
Either way, watching the two generations of blue Alpines throw down on a wet, slick road high in the Alps is worth every second.
