EV Or Hot Rod? How About Both With BMW Venture Design (Video)

Green vehicles are exciting to some folks, but the guys that really live for automobiles - that element of hard-charging, tire-burning classic-car lovers - are unlikely to experience a heightened pulse over the latest city car. Perhaps if electric cars had just a little more soul and fun factor, they would. How about a thrifty commuter workhorse during the week and a fast, hot-cornering hot rod on Saturday and Sunday? This design study blends those two worlds into one.

Okay, before we introduce the BMW Venture further, we'll note that it is a design study that doesn't appear to have anything to do with BMW. Designers often label their imaginative works with their favorite manufacturers (or perhaps the ones that they envision developing the concept at some point in the future). The design study is brought to us by designer Chris Hammersley by way of Yanko Design.

That being said, it's a pretty sweet, little concept. The car is a small city commuter that can crawl its way into the smallest of downtown parking spaces. It runs on hydrogen fuel cell technology. With the push of a button, the wheels and swingarms extend and give the car a longer, hot-rod-style profile. Not only does it look a lot cooler than the average mini-EV, it would probably be a lot more fun to drive.

Of course, Hammersley falls a little short in his design. To really make this the car to bridge the gap between eco-conscious urbanite and suburban drag-race hound, we think a swappable fuel-cell-powered motor and big, gas-gurgling engine (V-8, perhaps?) would really bring it home. We're not sure how that'd work in that tiny, hoodless body, but it's just a design study, so physics don't really matter - you think Hammersley really worked through how the front end would shoot out at the push of a button?

Like any good design study, the BMW Venture is a nice meal for thought. Chow down on the video below.
