Watch The Infiniti Emerg-E Take On Goodwood (Video)

Infiniti said that it would use the Goodwood Festival of Speed for the Emerg-E concept's first public drive, and it made good on the promise over the weekend. Infiniti rolled out the working prototype, and drivers hit the Hillclimb with it. A short, sweet video brings all us non-Goodwood attendees up to speed.

Infiniti debuted the Emerg-E at this year's Geneva Motor Show. It spent the ensuing months building a working prototype true to the concept, with the help of a variety of British partners, including the UK Government's Technology Strategy Board (TSB), Lotus Engineering, EVO and Xtrac.

"Normally these motor-show concepts have a small electric motor fitted in them, just enough to move them on and off the stand," says Jerry Hardcastle, Vice-President Vehicle Design and Development, the Nissan Group Technology Centre Europe and Chairman of the UK's Automotive Council. "We said, how about putting a real car under there and showing what it would look like as a running vehicle, and at the same time use this collaboration of UK companies to demonstrate the UK's capability in this area."

The Goodwood prototype uses the 402-hp powertrain that Infiniti announced in Geneva. That powertrain partners dual electric motors with a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine-generator. The electric motors provide up to 30 miles of no-emissions driving, and the engine-generator extends that to a more practical range.

The prototype gets minor changes like the addition of a spoiler to enhance aerodynamics.

The development of the Emerg-E has become part of the Technology Strategy Board's quest to put more low-carbon vehicles on the roads. From Goodwood, the Emerg-E demonstrators will go on a world tour and undergo testing for the next year. Infiniti has hinted about the possibility of production, but the most recent rumors throw that into question.

One minute is all you'll need to take in the Emerg-E Goodwood action.
