Smart USA Topples Challenger In Twitter Tussle

Just yesterday, the hawk-eyed folks at Jalopnik spotted a Twitter slugmatch which validated everything we’ve learned from Jay-Z, Kanye West and 50 Cent over the years – when someone makes a polite, but witty critique about you…the best option is to respond with a less polite, but more witty comment.

The tussle began when Clayton Hove, a Twitter user and pseudo-ad critic, felt compelled to poke fun at the Smart Car. To his delight, and surprise, Smart USA responded with a complicated mathematical analysis and handy infographic. Hove, as it would turn out, merely brought a tweet to a Calculus BC fight.

In Hove’s original tweet, he stated: “Saw a bird had crapped on a Smart Car. Totaled it.”

To which Smart USA responded, “Couldn’t have been one bird. Sounds more like 4.5 million. (Seriously, we did the math.)”

According to Smart USA’s infographic, the vehicle’s tridion safety cell can withstand pressure up to 9,000 lbs. Of course we have no idea if that’s 9,000 pounds total, per foot, per inch, or some other unit of measurement. And Smart USA’s lack of clarity might be troubling for some.

Fortunately the company anticipated our obsession with fact finding and threw in a footnote to subdue our concerns. “Figures are estimated and may not be exact. But they’re not totally full of crap, either.”

In response, Hove readily admitted that Smart USA trumped his original quip. The rogue ad critic then signed off with a zinger which suggested he was bloodied, but not defeated: “Now if you’ll just FedEx me one of your fine automobiles, I’ll love you forever.”

Which is where Jay-Z and our other rapping social commentators come in again. If you’ll recall the Jay-Z vs. Nas feud of the early 2000s, the rap ‘battles’ really only went back and forth a few times – but after round two nobody really cared what each rapper thought about the other.

Smart USA will have to think carefully about how or if the company should respond to Hove’s last comment. Right now, Smart USA has the edge as far as advertising supremacy goes. A further response would have to both (1) be more hilarious than Hove’s FedEx statement and (2) more cutesy than a bird feces infographic.

As it stands, Smart USA is deserving of a collective high five. Bravo.

I don't know - I'd say Clayton's initial tweet still wins. haha.
