BMW Supercar May Be Back On The Table

Rumors about a new BMW M1 supercar have been a little scattered and schizophrenic. After hearing about the possibility of a new M1 for years, BMW brass laid the rumor to rest last year. Or did they? A new report with roots in Germany says that the M1 is indeed being developed.

A report trail that winds its way back to Germany's Auto Bild suggests that BMW is working on an M1 successor to be introduced in 2016. Taking the report's info at face value, the car will be a lightweight blend of aluminum, magnesium, titanium and plastic. Power will come from a ~600-hp V-8 turbo that pushes the car to around 205 mph. Thanks to its turbo engine and start-stop system, the car will deliver high performance without the detriment of atrocious fuel economy.

Does this rumor make a lot of sense? Besides the fact that BMW said that an M1 successor is a no-go, a performance sports car with a focus on cleaner driving sounds a lot like the i8, which will hit the market as BMW's halo performance model in a couple years.

An ultralight, V-8 powered sports car would offer a more in the performance category than the plug-in i8, so maybe BMW has ambitions above and beyond the i8. Such a car could give it a competitor to the Mercedes SLS AMG, Ferrari 458 Italia and rumored Porsche mid-level supercar. Early indications are that the new M1 would cost around 250,000 euros (more than $300K), well more than double the i8's expected price around 100,000 euros.

We're skeptical but hopeful...
