Volvo Dangles Polestar S60 Concept

Last November, Volvo dropped the Polestar performance upgrade for the company’s hot hatch C30. And ever since, Volvo fans have wondered when the next Polestar treatment would come – and more importantly, which vehicle would receive the upgrade.

Fortunately for all involved, the wait was worth it. Just a few days ago, Volvo unveiled vehicle specs for an upcoming Polestar S60, injected to the brim with performance enhancers. Sure, the old school S60 Type R could jump from 0-60 in a blistering 5.4 seconds. But this S60 is a whole other animal.

Of course, that’s not surprising when you consider a T6 with modified cylinder head, combustion chambers, inlet manifold, and air intake. Tack on a Garret turbo and the Polestar S60 is good for 508 horsepower and 424 lb-ft of torque.

Oh, and a projected 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds.

Since we can’t possibly say it better, Robert Dahlgren, of Volvo’s Polestar racing crew, previously noted: “to me the Volvo S60 is a very well sorted car from the start. In our concept car, we have developed chassis, engine and transmission just like we want it, and the result is a huge leap forward in terms of handling and performance. It is, by far, the most impressive street Volvo I’ve ever driven. But I must also say that the genuine Volvo feeling is still there.”

If they aren’t already, BMW and Mercedes-Benz should take notice. Volvo is – perhaps for the first time ever – playing the luxury performance game for keeps.

And the upgraded specs don’t stop with engine mods. For starters, the entire vehicle body is substantially lower and wider than a stock S60. Total weight has been chopped by slightly over 200 lbs. An upgraded Haldex AWD and Ohlins three-mode suspension are tacked on as well. And let’s not forget about the six-speed manual transmission.

So far, price and a specific production date remain obscured by the veil of good old fashioned dramatic advertising. Perhaps we’ll get more info soon, but in the meantime try to be consoled by Volvo’s spectacular Polestar S60 teaser images.

We’ll be doing that, and daydreaming of a V60 Polestar spin. Nothing in all of Christendom tickles the automotive inclination more than a performance-tuned, manual transmission, AWD, wagon.
