Honda Recalls 50,000 Civics!

Honda has just released a recall to bring back an astounding 50,190 brand new 2012 Civics. It seems that a retaining clip was not installed during production that may cause the driveshaft to separate. As one can imagine, this potential problem can cause serious trouble for drivers and pedestrians alike. The car may roll away even when placed in "park" unless the emergency brake is engaged. The car could suddenly lose power due to the loss of connection between the engine and the drive wheels, causing serious traffic problems and more than likely a crash.

Owners can call Honda at 1-800-999-1009 to schedule a free inspection/repair of their driveshaft, or simply wait for Honda to begin contacting customers later this month.

Read on for the full report.

Vehicle Make / Model:Model Year(s):
Honda / Civic2012
Manufacturer:Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
Mfr's Report Date:Jun 01, 2012
NHTSA Campaign ID Number:12V256000
NHTSA Action Number:N/A
Component:Power Train: Driveline: Driveshaft
Potential Number of Units Affected:50,190

Summary:

Honda is recalling certain model year 2012 Honda Civic vehicles. During assembly, the process required to seat the driver’s side driveshaft and set the retaining clip was not completed. As a result, the driveshaft may separate.

Consequence:

If this occurs, the vehicle will have a loss of drive power and may roll away if the parking brake has not been set when the gear selector has been placed in the “park” position, increasing the risk of crash or pedestrian injury.

Remedy:

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver’s side driveshaft and install a new driveshaft, as needed, free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on, or about, June 21, 2012. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-800-999-1009.

Notes:

Honda's recall campaign number is S40. Customers may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov.
