Ford Launches MyFord Mobile App For Focus Electric

It's not really an electric car unless it comes with a smartphone app for battery charging. Ford launched the MyFord Mobile app earlier this week, offering Focus Electric owners a mobile platform for monitoring and controlling battery charging.

Focus Electric deliveries started a couple of weeks ago, and the first owners can now download the mobile app from the iTunes store. The app connects with the car via an AT&T wireless module and allows remote access to battery charge information and other features. When the Focus Electric is plugged in, value-mode charging works with the Microsoft cloud to check local utility rates and activate charging when prices drop, helping to save owners money. Ford calls the technology an industry first.

The app also includes a navigation function, whereby drivers can map out directions, get information about available public charging stations along the way, and send the destination information wirelessly to the car. GO Times lets drivers control certain functions, such as heating the car up in the morning. Drivers can also use MyFord Mobile to view and analyze trip data to develop smarter driving habits.

In addition to the app features, Ford has launched an accompanying My Ford Mobile website (myfordmobile.com) where drivers can share tips and experiences. The site will include leader boards, unique achievements and social networking elements.

Bill Frykman, Business and Product Development manager says, "This innovative app also offers new ways of sharing your driving experiences to create a “cool” factor while educating new Focus Electric drivers on the perks that come with an electric vehicle lifestyle."

Note to Bill Frykman (or whoever wrote that quote for him): it stops being cool when you have to put it in quotations.

Ford's press release does not mention apps for other smartphone systems like Android.
