Four Door Fiat Slated To Come to U.S

Great news in the auto industry! The Italian Fiat is bringing a four-door version of the 500 model to North America as a result of a recent merger between Chrysler and Fiat. Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne said Monday that recent plans for a new Chrysler plant to build Fiat engines in southeastern Michigan denotes "a huge step forward" for the incorporation of Chrysler into Fiat.

Timing for the launch of the four-door Fiat 500 in the United States is still uncertain. The Chrysler Group is not sure how many of its dealerships will sell Fiats. The advent of the four-door 500 in North America has been agreed upon, but the date may or may not be announced at this week’s upcoming executive meeting, where a 5-year plan is scheduled to be put into place.

The launch of the new Fiat four-door is a historic event since this will be the first time Fiat has sold an automobile in the U.S. since 1983 (according to Forbes.com). According to company sources, the vehicle will appear in Europe by the end of 2011. Timing for the United States is still uncertain. The four-door Fiat would be in the small minivan class of vehicles in Europe because it has a hatchback and high roof, and it would compete with other automobiles in its class, such as the Opel Meriva.

The details regarding the design of the Fiat 500 four-door have not yet been announced, nor has its engine options or price tag, but some sources believe it will be similar to the Fiat L12, 350 which has a 69-horsepower engine that goes from 0-60 in under 12.9 seconds with a top speed of 99 mph. This mini car is actually really big in Europe (due to high fuel prices) where it gets a whopping 44.1 mpg in the city and 65.7 mpg during highway driving. That’s better than any U.S. built hybrid vehicle on the road today.

The new four-door Fiat will be built on a longer, wider platform than the two-door 500, and the North American four-door version of the Fiat 500 is planned for production to take place, ready for export, at Chrysler's factory in Toluca Mexico. In 2012, Fiat will launch the performance version of the 500, presented under the Abarth brand. The four-door Fiat will be the 4th addition to the Fiat 500 line-up in North America.

I saw the two door at the NY Auto Show and it is a nice looking car but the four door based on the above photo is one ugly vehicle. At least the Mini Crossman looks cool if it comes to fruition.
