Hyundai Makes A Push For National Fuel Efficiency Month

With gas prices as high as they've been, many people might like to think of every month as "national fuel efficiency month," but Hyundai is making a push to give August that distinction. It hopes that August 2012 can be the first official National Fuel Efficiency Month in the United States and is even petitioning the government to make it happen.

Hyundai explains: "You know, there’s a day or month devoted to just about everything. At Hyundai, we think there should also be a month dedicated to something that affects everyone: FUEL EFFICIENCY."

It kicked off the campaign on Tuesday, which you may or may not realize was World Environment Day. Hyundai envisions that designating the month will help to focus the public's attention on the simple things that can increase fuel economy - keeping tires at proper pressure, using cruise control, buying a Hyundai Veloster...

Hyundai explains that it chose August because people tend to take vacations during the month, many of which involve road trips - what better time to remind people of the simple maintenance items involved in optimizing fuel economy?

If you think Hyundai is on to something, you can sign its petition to the White House. It's hoping to rack up 25,000 signatures by July 4. If nothing else, it'll give you an excuse to say, "I sent a petition to the White House."

Whether or not it's successful in getting the official designation, it plans to share fuel economy tips and other information via its Facebook page. It also mentions the chance to win free gas for a year. Tuesday's kick-off included four events in cities around the country highlighting the topic of fuel efficiency.

Of course, Hyundai hasn't missed the opportunity to inject a little advertising into the campaign, reminding us that it ranks number one in terms of fuel economy and CO2 emissions.
