Ford Reveals Refreshed 2013 F-150

For 2013, Ford has updated the F-150 to resemble the company’s larger, more powerful full-sized truck variant, the Super Duty. While we won’t see any startling changes to next year’s F-150, expect to see new 18 and 20 inch wheel options, an updated front fascia, high-intensity discharge headlamps, and those massively oversized side view mirrors found on the F-150’s big brother.

With an incoming overhaul due for the Dodge Ram and Chevy Silverado, Ford seems to be playing it safe until the dust settles – choosing to let competitors make the first move.

But that doesn’t mean the 2013 F-150 will be a lame duck. “The 2013 Ford F-150 adds more style and technology that sets a benchmark for capability and efficiency in light-duty pickups,” said F-150 Marketing Manager Raj Sarkar. “We continue to focus on the no-compromise solution for our customers, giving them all the conveniences and technologies they want with the capability they need and the fuel efficiency to go further.”

Underneath all that technology and convenience, Ford still offers the same great engine lineup. The least powerful, but most efficient powertrain is a 3.7-liter V6, producing 302 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. The 4x2 model is capable of 17 mpg city and 23 mpg on the highway – pretty impressive for a box-shaped vehicle geared for a maximum trailer tow of 6,100 lbs. In addition to available 5.0-liter and 6.2-liter V8s, Ford continues to push their 3.5-liter EcoBoost as the crown jewel of the lineup. Expect 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway, while achieving best-in-class trailer towing (11,300), payload (3,120), and torque (420 lb-ft).

In short, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost is still the best available engine, combining economic practicality with the strengths of a much larger engine.

Three new exterior colors are also set to arrive in 2013: Blue Jeans Metallic, Kodiak Brown Metallic, and Ruby Red Clearcoat Metallic. Pricing should show up in the next few months, and expect numbers which continue to grow along with the F-150’s side view mirrors. Although the vehicle’s dimensions are roughly identical to the preceding few years, Ford may be giving us a glimpse of the future by adding Super Duty-like headlights to the incoming F-150.

And taking into consideration the last few model renovations, the F-150 does tend to expand with each successive generation. Perhaps we’ll need those side view mirrors to look around the trucks of 2014.
