Volkswagen May Build Mid-Size Crossover

Volkswagen is considering adding a third SUV to its North American line-up. The SUV would slide between the Tiguan small crossover and larger Touareg.

Last week, Volkswagen Americas CEO John Browning told reporters that a new mid-size crossover is under consideration. Autoweek quotes Browning as citing a "great opportunity for a mid-size SUV."

Volkswagen currently has a football field worth of room between the Tiguan, which starts at around $23,000, and the Touareg, which starts at over $43,000. Various Tiguan trim levels occupy the space up to around $38,000, but there's certainly room for a larger crossover that starts in the upper 20's to lower 30's, where SUVs like the Ford Edge, Nissan Murano and Toyota Highlander reside.

Both current Volkswagen SUVs tend to run a little small when compared to the competition in terms of vehicle length and overall cargo capacity, so it has room to play. Autoweek reports that the new model would have SUV-styling cues, so we assume it would be a boxier crossover with more cargo hauling.

If Volkswagen greenlights a new SUV, it may build it at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant. The plant is ramping up for a capacity of 180,000 vehicles by next year, and potential expansions could bring capacity up to 250,000 to 500,000 vehicles per year.
