Fiat 500 To Get Even Bigger With 'X' version?

American consumers haven't exactly been enthralled by the Fiat 500, but maybe they'll take more to the upcoming L variant. If not, Fiat may give them an even bigger 500 to look at: the 500 X. That X stands for "cross," not XL, and the model will essentially be the Fiat 500 crossover.

It's hard to really think of a pint-sized car like the Fiat 500 as a crossover, but that's essentially what Fiat plans to do with its extra large version, according to Automotive News Europe. The 500 X will be the largest version of the 500 (unless a XX follows?), and it will come in both front - and all-wheel drive flavors.

The 500 X will sit on a widened version of Fiat's subcompact platform, along with the 500L and a small, sub-Compass/Patriot Jeep crossover. The model will be about 2 inches longer than the 500L, which debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March. It will be produced along with the small Jeep at Fiat's Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy, beginning as early as late next year. It will serve as a replacement for the Sedici (pictured).

There's no word on whether the 500X will be sold in North America, but given that Fiat has already committed to bringing the 500L over, we wouldn't be that surprised to see it.

According to the report, the Jeep crossover, codenamed the B-SUV, will make it to North America. Production is set to begin by mid-2014 and plans include a trail-rated version.
