Mercedes Okays Baby SLS AMG

For months, the terms "baby SLS" and "SLC" have occasionally surfaced in auto news sources. Mercedes has reportedly been developing a smaller, less expensive coupe to complement the SLS AMG flagship. Now, it's given it the official go-ahead, according to one news source.

Auto Express reports that Mercedes Head of Design Gorden Wagener confirmed the model and its "SLC" name from the floor of the Beijing Motor Show last week. Past reports have said that the model was coming, but this is the first that we've seen that gives confirmation attributed directly to a Mercedes exec.

The SLC will be a mid-level sports car competent enough to compete with notables like the Porsche 911 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Wagener didn't confirm any details about the car, but speculation awards it anywhere from 350 to 500 V6- and/or V8-sourced horses. Due to cost constraints, it's unlikely to share gullwing doors with its big brother.

An Auto Bild report from last summer had the SLC debuting in 2014, but only if Mercedes decided to sell it alongside the SLS AMG. If it decides to wind the bigger supercar down, and cap its sports car line with the SLC, it may wait until 2016 for the model's debut.

Whatever the final details, a Mercedes 911 fighter/more attainable SLS AMG sounds like good news for sports car fanatics.
