Acura RL To Get NSX's Hybrid Powertrain

Honda introduced the hybrid drivetrain that underpins the Acura NSX before the NSX itself, so it's not all that surprising that the automaker plans to use the system in more cars than just its upcoming Acura sports flagship. According to a new report, Honda also plans to use the hybrid system in its flagship sedan.

Honda chief Takanobu Ito told Auto News that the redesigned RL sedan will use the same hybrid powertrain as the NSX. In fact, the RL might be the first Acura to get the system, as a redesigned RL is likely to beat the NSX to market. The system will allow for better handling.

Called the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD, the all-wheel drive system uses two front-mounted electric motors and a mid-mounted 3.5-liter V-6 engine, as shown on the NSX. The RL will get a variant with two rear-mounted electric motors and a front-mounted engine. Honda first detailed the powertrain at the Tokyo Motor Show late last year.

It's not yet clear if the RL will be offered exclusively with the hybrid system, or if Honda will offer both gas and hybrid powertrain options. The current RL uses a non-hybrid SH-AWD system powered by a 300-hp 3.7-liter V-6 engine.

The hybrid-ized RL is just one of several new hybrid options that Honda will be launching in coming years. A dual-motor hybrid system for mid-sized vehicles like the Accord and a new motor-assist system for small cars like the Fit are among other hybrid projects in the works, according to Auto News.

Thanks

The 2011 Acura RL is a perfect example of a vehicle model thats coming to the end of its useful life. Its tired, ordinary and being overtaken by the competition. For slightly more than a 5-series BMW, Acura want you to buy an average car with average looks and average capability. It also run fast on the track as compare to the models of Honda"s.
