Hyundai i-oniq Concept Revealed

This year's Geneva show promises to be a breeding ground for sporty, range-extending hybrid concepts. We've already seen pictures of the Infiniti Emerg-E, which Infiniti has admitted is a range-extender. We've also gotten a look at the Pininfarina Cambiano concept, which is rumored to be a diesel-electric range extender. Now, it's Hyundai's turn.

With the i-oniq, Hyundai attempts to bottle some of the sportiness of cars like the Genesis and Veloster inside a range-extending electric platform. The car appears to be a hatchback but is lower than the Veloster. Its roofline has some curve, unlike the Veloster's flat-top. The car is a preview of the next step in Hyundai's "fluidic sculpture" design language.

The i-oniq is powered by a yet-to-be-identified, rear-mounted electric motor. That motor gets some extra range capability from an equally unidentified gas engine-generator.

The car was developed at Hyundai's European R&D center. Hyundai first teased the concept in December.

We'll have to wait until next week to get more details. In the meantime, we'll add this to our growing list of interesting range-extenders.
