Durheimer Provides A Few More Details On Bentley SUV

It's no secret that Bentley is building an SUV. While production plans are not 100 percent yet, Bentley CEO Wolfgang Durheimer has been doing some talking about the model's potential future.

Durheimer told Automotive News Europe that Bentley and parent company Volkswagen should make a decision on the SUV by the end of the year, with production to start within three years. If it gets the green light, he projects between 3,500 and 5,000 annual sales, a sizeable boost when you consider that Bentley sold about 7,000 Mulsanne and Continental models last year. Durheimer qualified the estimate as conservative.

Durheimer also said that Bentley wants to use the model to launch a plug-in hybrid system should it go to production. It will be built on the platform that sits under the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7.

The company is expected to show a concept version of its SUV at next week's Geneva Motor Show.

Pretty soon luxury and performance brands of all kinds will have SUV models. Porsche was the first with its Cayenne and will soon add the Macan, a smaller SUV. Maserati showed the Kubang at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show, and Lamborghini will show its own SUV at the Beijing Auto Show in April. One of the only big European supercar brands that will certainly not get an SUV is Ferrari.
