Chevy Restarts Production On The Volt

Apparently Chevy had stopped production of the Volt plug-in hybrid back around the holidays. You probably didn't notice since you weren't shopping for a Volt. Neither were many of your fellow Americans. And we're guessing those Chevy dealers that actually wanted to stock Volts had plenty on hand. Production was stopped for over a month and resumed earlier in February.

The Detroit News reports that GM resumed production of the Volt on February 6. Chevy stopped production for the holiday break.

Despite the shutdown, GM told the paper that it has had some positive sales momentum in February. After a strong sales finish to 2011, despite not meeting its 10,000-unit sales goal, GM experienced a big setback in January. Volt battery fire issues combined with government investigations created a spate of bad headlines for GM that hurt sales. January sales dropped to 603 units, less than half of the 1,529 sold in December. GM has been attempting to battle image and sales problems with a series of new television commercials.

As part of its revamped sales efforts, GM is targeting California. When equipped with the Low Emissions Package, the Volt is eligible for a $1,500 California state rebate in addition to up to $7,500 of federal money. That rebate drops the Volt's price down to around $31,000. Considering the Volt's high price is one of the major factors keeping consumers from buying it, every little price break counts.

The Low Emissions Package, which does not add to the base price of the Volt, makes software and hardware modifications to reduce emissions from the gas engine. In addition to opening up extra rebate money, the package gives Californian buyers single-occupant access to HOV lanes.

In another few days we'll see if GM is exaggerating its February upswing.

I hope GM knows that TV commercials aren't going to help the volts image. They should be trying to reach out to customers and let them know that everything is fixed. But what do i know any who the tax breaks are a big thing with the EV cars and i think if they found a way to make them more affordable more people would buy them.
