Honda Recalls 45,000 Odysseys

Honda has issued a recall of 45,747 Odyssey models produced in 2008-2009. It seems that the gas-filled struts that were used to support the rear lift gate in models equipped with the power lift gate have been found to have a flaw from the manufacturer. This flaw may cause the gas to leak from the strut and ultimate failure in the strut.

Now, on a personal note coming from someone who has had struts fail on a hatchback type of vehicle (mine were because of old age, not any type of flaw but the result was the same), I learned two things:  1) Hatches are a lot heavier than may initially appear, and 2) Although they are heavy, you don't know when they are falling until it is too late. As an adult, it hurt badly enough to have a hundred pound or so hatch come down on the back of this writer's head, so considering those owning an Odyssey are likely to have children it's no wonder this recall is going into effect.

Honda will begin notifying owners in about three weeks, but owners may contact Honda earlier to schedule a free fix.

Potential Number of Units Affected:45,747

Honda is recalling certain model year 2008-2009 Odyssey vehicles, the gas-filled struts that help to raise and support the liftgate of vehicles equipped with a power liftgate system may be prone to early life failures due to a manufacturing flaw. The flaw can result in a leak of the pressurized gas, leading to reduced strut performance.

Struts with diminished performance can lead to unexpected closure, increasing the risk of personal injury.

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace both power liftgate gas struts free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on or about March 13, 2012. Owners may contact Honda Customer Service at 1-800-999-1009.

Honda's recall campaign number is S22. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov.

Well this is one speedy fix, this is probably the fastest recall i have seen be done in a long time but it is well deserved cause almost everyone who owns a mini van have kids.

I think Honda made a smart decision doing this recall so fast cause if not they sure would have a lot of lawsuits on their hands.
