New Ferrari Enzo Will Pack More Than 900 Horses

The upcoming Ferrari F620 may be the "most powerful Ferrari ever," but it won't stay that way for long. The other Ferrari due for debut this year - the heir to the F40/F50/Enzo throne - will most certainly surpass the F620's power figures. The question is by how much. The latest answer is that it will be by around 200 hp.

When it retired in 2004, the Ferrari Enzo used a 660-hp V-12 engine. The Enzo's output was about 150 horses greater than the other V-12 car in Ferrari's line at the time (575M Maranello). Bearing that in mind while hearing official confirmation of the upcoming F620's ~ 700 horses, we were starting to wonder: Will the Enzo successor really only have the rumored 800-hp engine, a mere 90 or so more than the F620?

It looks like the answer is yes and no. The latest information is more of a clarification of what we know than a refutation. According to Automobile, the Enzo successor, which they say may be called the F70, will indeed have an 800-hp engine - a 7.3-liter version of the FF and F620's 6.3-liter V-12. But the V-12 won't be the only thing delivering power to the wheels. Another 120-hp will come from a hybrid system, likely some form of the HY-KERS system that Ferrari has shown in concept form. So that means we'll be looking at as much as 920 horses. The HY-KERS system will also allow for some short, emissions free driving.

Ferrari will make the F70 as light as possible with plenty of composites. The weight is likely to be somewhere in the 2,500 lb. range. Combined with all that horsepower, that low weight will help the F70 to compete with other million-dollar supercars (Bugatti Veyron, we're looking at you) in terms of acceleration and speed.

Ferrari's parent company Fiat had said that the Enzo successor will debut this year, and Automobile puts the debut in the fall, which we take to mean the Paris Motor Show.
