Mini To Get Even Bigger With Van And Station Wagon

There are really only so many people that will put down money on a tiny mini-car. Sure, these small cars boast great gas mileage, but they're not exactly equipped to handle many passengers or much cargo. They just aren't practical for every driver.

Mini, a company founded on the idea of tiny minicars, has slowly been growing its offerings with larger cars like the Countryman and Clubman. Though it may return to its tiny roots with a Rocketman-inspired production car, the company has no plans of abandoning larger vehicles. In fact, it plans to build both a van and station wagon.

Based on information out of Germany - where Mini's parent company BMW is based, Auto News reports that Mini plans to add the station wagon and van by 2020. The station wagon will have five doors and will sit on the same platform as the next-generation Mini Cooper. The van will share its underpinnings with the Mini Countryman.

While it sounds like the van and station wagon are relatively sure things, a possible notchback sedan is still under consideration. It is apparently being "hotly debated" as a Chinese-market offering.

The last we heard, Mini was planning to go in the opposite direction. The Mini Rocketman, a concept that debuted at last year's Geneva Motor Show, is another vehicle that is reportedly under production consideration. That model is nearly a foot shorter than the Mini Cooper, closer in size to the original Cooper than to the current model. The concept uses some innovative components to make the most out of its small size.

In a similar act of growing an iconic mini-car, Fiat will soon introduce an extended version of its 500. The 500L will debut at next month's Geneva Motor Show.
