Smoldering Kia Soul 'Red Rock' Edition Oozes Style

Unfortunately for most subcompact or compact car buyers, the range of vehicle color options is usually pretty limited. There are exceptions, of course, with Mini and Fiat. But for the most part we’re stuck with vehicles offered in Satin Pearl While, Radiant Red, and the like. Kia, on the other hand, has taken some big risks with their most youthful vehicle, the Soul: from highlighter green, appropriately labeled Alien, to the last six special edition Soul variants which offered wacky colors and accessories to boot.

And the company’s latest seventh special edition Soul tops them all. Just a few days ago, Kia Motors America announced the production of an all-new Red Rock Soul which takes inspiration from the epic rock formations found in the Southwest United States – featuring a snazzy color theme and premium features.

“The wildly popular Soul has been a game-changer for Kia since it arrived in 2009, and our series of special editions over the past three years have added individualism and exclusivity to an already fun and youthful vehicle,” said Michael Sprague, vice president of marketing and communications, Kia Motors America. “Style and flair are key to the Soul’s success, and the Red Rock Special Edition, which has plenty of both, will help drive sales into 2012.”

Mechanically, the Red Rock edition is similar to other high end Souls in the vehicle lineup. The exterior’s black and brown theme continues into the interior, with automatic climate control and heated front seats to add a dash of sophistication.

After last year’s New York Auto Show, where a Red Rock concept was unveiled, the vehicle made a cross country road trip to gauge potential consumer reaction. Apparently public demand was sufficient enough to warrant a production model, and we can see why.

Although the starting price of a Red Rock Soul is anticipated to be $20,600, plus a $750 destination and handling fee, this latest Soul variant boasts class-leading horsepower, strong fuel efficiency (27 city and 35 hwy), and enough glitz and glam to stun Tim Gunn. If you’re looking for a compact vehicle with an emphasis on style, then you’ll have a tough time finding an equally radical, yet respected vehicle at that price point.

The Red Rock special edition takes the Soul a step further, making high concept art something of an everyday practicality.

I like the Soul, but that color is pretty "blah". Maybe it'll look better in-person.
