GM's Chevy Volt Super Bowl Ad

After a couple of months of bad publicity, GM will look to rally around the Chevy Volt and work on improving its image beginning on Super Bowl Sunday. A new Volt ad was among five Chevy ads that GM planned for the game.

The Chevy Volt has had a rough couple of months. In November, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation on a potential battery-fire issue - about the last thing the Volt or any electric powered car needs. Just when it looked like Chevy had solved the problem to the NHTSA's satisfaction, Congress decided that the government's vehicular safety agency might have been negligent in its duties and opened up hearings on the Volt and NHTSA's handling of the issue. Some harsh quotes made headlines, and the Chevy's Volt image has been in rapid spiral mode for weeks.

Last month, Volt sales were down to their lowest level since August. The month before, the Volt closed out 2011 with 25 percent less sales than originally planned, and GM has tempered its sales expectations for 2012.

Overall, the Volt needs some good news. Earlier this week, GM North America President Mark Reuss told the Detroit News that the company will be working to repair the Volt's damaged image.

One of the first steps toward boosting the Volt's image will be a new Volt ad, which appeared during the Super Bowl. The ad features a Volt owner trying to explain the concept of a series hybrid to fascinated aliens in the middle of the night. You can view it below. It doesn't exactly address any issues, but at least it shows the Volt in a positive light - something that hasn't happened lately.

The new Volt ad is one of five Chevy ads debuted during the Super Bowl. Chevy also had two Sonic ads, a Silverado ad, the contest-winning "Happy Grad" ad and a music commercial featuring OK Go.
