Honda Gives Ferris Bueller A Second Day Off

Honda released the extended version of its Ferris Bueller-based Super Bowl commercial for all to see. It plays like a sequel packed down into a two-and-a-half minute commercial, with movie references galore.

Honda isn't kidding about advertising its new, massive-headed 2012 CR-V. Not only did it revive a 25-year-old movie for its latest commercial, and not only did it get a still-relevant Matthew Broderick to act in it, it also employed director Todd Phillips whose past works include The Hangover, Due Date and Old School.

Called “Matthew's Day Off,” the commercial plays closely to the original with dozens of references and props. Some references - like the "Broderick...Broderick" that mimics Ben Stein's legendary “Bueller....Bueller” - are obvious, while others are much more subtle. Honda uses the example of a vest from the original movie that appears in a department store window as one of the plants that you'll find if you pay attention. Honda is encouraging viewers to look closely for these “Easter eggs” and discuss them at Facebook.com/hondacrv.

Honda envisions the Super Bowl spot as more than just a way of leveraging a famous character and actor. It says that the kids that grew up watching the original movie make up the target demographic for the 2012 CR-V. Honda's press release says, “The campaign encourages the active, hip Gen-Y audience transitioning between their carefree twenties and their more focused thirties to conquer their aspirations by completing their own ‘Leap List.’”

“As with our other CR-V commercials that began airing this month, this fun commercial reminds viewers to go out and embrace life — do the things you want to do, not just the things you have to do,” Joe Baratelli, EVP, ECD at RPA, Honda's longstanding agency of record, said in the press release.

Honda released a quick teaser last week and, as promised, followed up on Monday with a 2:23 minute extended version of the commercial. The company will launch the actual ad during the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl and will follow up during the week after the game with “several large portal takeovers featuring ‘Matthew's Day Off.’”

Check it out.
