Next BMW Project i Vehicle To Be An i5

When BMW announced its Project i line, word was that it envisioned an entire range of high-end green cars filling the line. We already know that the range-topping i8 sports car and i3 city car are on the way. The latest reports indicate that the next i model in development will sit between those two in the i5 slot.

The i3 and i8 are expected to debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. A report originating on German site Autobild puts the i5's debut two years later, perhaps at the 2015 Frankfurt show.

The i5 is rumored to be a plug-in hybrid hatchback MPV that will serve as a premium alternative to the Toyota Prius Plug-In. Essentially it should look like a larger version of the i3 that's pictured above. The car would be powered by a rear-mounted electric motor worth 170 hp. It will be built in both all electric and plug-in hybrid variants, the latter of which will use a 90-hp engine as a range-extending generator.

The MPV will be designed for family-level space and versatility, offering a high roof and sliding rear seat.

While it's far too early to know for sure, Autobild's report says the price will be around €50,000 ($65,000).

This new report refutes a previous report that described the i5 as a sedan.

These new concepts models look ridiculous, lets hope this car doesn't look like this when it hits dealerships.

I agree they look horrible.
