What Lurks Beneath, Corolla Destroys Strip [Video]

Pop quiz, what is the single most unlikely car to make an athletic showing on your local drag strip? Aside from a Smart, the third generation Toyota Corolla is probably the next worst option. But not in Australia, the land of recent Frankenstein-like mechanical recreations, this particular Corolla laid waste to the expectations of challengers and onlookers.

Such is the Tao of a true sleeper.

From the outside, the vehicle looks like an off white, straight from the dealership, people hauler which offers no indication of the devious threat lurking within. Upon further inspection, however, viewers might pick up subtle cues of hidden glory – small slicks appear menacingly cute on the vehicle’s rear wheels and few could miss the open hostility of a whining turbo.

To see the Corolla’s full aspect, one must venture further, beneath the confines of the vehicle’s outer shell.

Underneath the hood is a story of extremes. Subtly has been thrown out the window and replaced with a crammed Nissan VG30 V6 engine paired to a beefy turbo and five speed manual transmission. The popular car junkie website Bangshift.com speculates that “the chassis is well sorted too because the car hooks hard, and runs down the track torque over like the Flintstone’s car with a Brontosaurus rib hanging off the side!” But who knows, the owner didn’t feel compelled to pump up much else…why worry about the chassis?

Without a doubt, the best part about the following video is the sheer shock factor. When we think about old Corollas, the mind tends to drift toward one of two things: (1) Indian taxi cabs or (2) some sort of vintage Top Gear episode with Jeremy Clarkson confidently clothed in head to toe denim (true story). Fortunately though, the video shows neither. Instead we’re left with a mind bending drag strip performance which closely rivals many supercars.

**Spoiler Alert**

The Corolla manages an 11.60 second quarter mile at 126 miles per hour on its first run and 11.83 seconds on a following attempt. In true Aussie spirit, the video ends with a cheeky tribute to the vehicle’s rear window bumper sticker, which proclaims ‘I heart Lawn Bowls’. The world may never know whether this is a reference to the driver’s other extracurricular hobby or a bit of shrewdly ironic humor. And, much like the car itself, that’s the best kind of surprise – one which doesn’t unveil itself until you find out first hand.
