2013 Porsche 918 Spyder To Debut Next Year

After bursting onto the scene at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show followed by ensuing rumors and reports about production and price, the Porsche 918 Spyder has been on an extended headline hiatus. Until now. A new report about the car's launch and production design has updated what we know about Porsche's hybrid supercar.

Unlike all the speculation and rumors that go on when it comes to a high-profile supercar in the vein of the 918, this one comes directly from Porsche by way of its in-house Christophorus Magazine. We can therefore take it as a "yes" rather than a "maybe."

Though the supercar was designed to deliver superior fuel economy and emissions numbers while offering supercar-like performance, Porsche will increase the engine size on the production model. It will use a new 4.6-liter V-8 instead of the 3.4-liter V-8 equipped to the concept.

Though the engine is larger, it shouldn't lose much efficiency or cleanliness because Porsche will equip it with a variety of new technologies. It will have a central injector mounted adjacent to the spark plug, a central oil feed to the crankshaft, forged lightweight pistons from a Formula 1 supplier and a very high compression ratio, among other new elements. It will also use Porsche's first application of variable valve timing with intake and exhaust phase stepper motors.

A rumor that accompanies a scanned copy of the article on Teamspeed forums indicates that output of the V-8 engine will rise to 550 horses, with two electric motors combining with it to provide a total of 740-hp or more. That's up from 718-hp in the concept and puts it closer to the 918 RSR coupe debuted at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show.

The 918 Spyder will "turn the sports-car world on its head" at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Porsche opened up the order books for the $845,000 918 Spyder last spring.
