AMG To Get Its Own Sports Car

As the high-performance, in-house tuner for Mercedes-Benz, AMG is already known for its high-end sports cars flagshipped by the SLS AMG. Apparently, Mercedes feels that AMG has done pretty well for itself in branding--well enough to leave the coop and fly on its own. Rumors point to the introduction of an AMG-branded sports car within the next few years.

Motor Trend reports that a sports car currently being called the SLV will debut at an auto show later this year. Unlike on the SLS AMG and other existing AMG-tuned vehicles, the AMG badge will make a move to the left, replacing the "Mercedes-Benz" in the "make" column.

The news comes at a time when high-performance tuning arms are getting bigger and bigger roles within automotive brands across the globe. Last year, reports surfaced that the Dodge Viper will make a similar move to Chrysler's newly spun-off performance and racing brand SRT. Over at Nissan, high-performance vehicles from Nismo may still bear the Nissan name, but the automaker is giving the tuner a new facility and increased role.

As for the car, the SLV will be a smaller sports coupe sharing components with the SLS AMG. Past reports have indicated that the car will be powered by a V-6 worth just over 400 hp. The V purportedly stands for "variable body styles," meaning that the car will be designed for coupe, roadster and other potential styles.

It will slide all the way to the other end of the spectrum from the SLS and compete with entry level sports cars like the Porsche Boxster. Outside of that, little is known in terms of engine, pricing, styling, etc. We'll just have to wait to see the car for ourselves.

Geneva might be a little too soon, so if we don't see it there, we'll expect it at the Paris Motor Show in the fall.
