Pininfarina Teases Cambiano Concept

I've seen enough sexy-headlight-teasers-turned-horrible-cars to maintain a healthy skepticism about how the car behind an attractive teaser angle will look in full, uncovered form. The latest example was the Detroit-debuted Toyota NS4, which looked great from headlight-only view, promised to provide a look at the latest, sportiest design language at Toyota, but looked pretty awkward when fully revealed.

Prevailing wisdom aside, there's a substantive difference between a teaser from a mainstream automaker and a teaser from an Italian design house. Given the track record of the latter, a sexy headlight teaser should indeed equate to a thing of beauty. So I'm officially excited to see what the Pininfarina Cambiano is all about.

The teaser shows a thin, LED-speckled headlamp and broad, curvy hood. That coupled with Pininfarina's description of the car as an elegant and refined sports sedan makes me believe that it will be a sexy concept and a highlight of the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.

If you think that a teaser from a design house is no more likely to lead to a sexy sports car than a teaser from any other automotive company, take a look at a few of the most recent concepts and models to come from Italian design houses like Pininfarina and Bertone. We're talking cars like the Pininfarina 2uettottanta from the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, the Bertone-styled Jaguar B99 from last year's show and any number of recent Zagato designs. And don't forget these babies. Such stylish, sometimes outlandish concepts are often among the most memorable highlights of a given auto show.

Outside of the sports sedan information, Pininfarina has said very little about the Cambiano. It did admit the concept will feature eco-friendly materials, though. The concept is named after the city where Pininfarina is based and is designed in celebration of Pininfarina Styling Center's 30th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of its Engineering Center.

Pencil in one more interesting debut for the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.
