North American Car And Truck Of The Year

The North American International Auto Show was last week, and the North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards were announced at the show. The awards haven't been given out just yet, but the winners have been selected.

Out of the pool of six finalists, judges chose the Hyundai Elantra and the Range Rover Evoque as the respective car and truck winners. The Elantra beat out the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Passat for the honors and the Evoque beat out the BMW X3 and Honda CR-V.

The Land Rover crushed the competition with a score of 254 compared to 142 points for the CR-V and 94 points for the X3. The race was a little closer in the car segment, with the Elantra getting 174 points, the Passat 161 and the Focus 155.

"The Hyundai Elantra is sporty, yet sensible. Luxurious, yet affordable. Spunky, but safe. The Elantra is a series of paradoxes and everyone is another argument for the latest, impressive entry in the Hyundai lineup," wrote Jayne O'Donnell, a member of the jury from USA Today.

Of the Evoque, jury member Alex Taylor, of Fortune magazine said, "Range Rover successfully charts a new direction for the venerable SUV trailblazer with a fresh design and advanced thinking about environmental issues."

Hyundai has been on a roll of late. The Sonata was one of the three finalists for the award last year, and the Genesis won the Car of the Year Award in 2009. These wins represent the only wins by South Korean vehicles in the awards' 19 years.

Land Rover, on the other hand, has never won the award, but has had two vehicles in the finals in the past.

With Land Rover, BMW and Volkswagen as finalists, this years' awards represented the strongest showing for European vehicles in 15 years.

Unlike other awards handed out by a single media outlet, the North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards are decided upon by a panel of 50 top automotive journalists from the United States and Canada. The journalists hail from all types of media, including magazines, newspapers and television.

While any award, particularly one as well vetted as the NACTOY, is good news to those winning, a recent Associated Press report indicates that actual sales results for past winners are mixed. Even if the award doesn't equate to a monumental sales boost, though, it can't hurt.

I am very surprised that Land Rover and Hyundai won, but at least they were two good vehicles that i like especially the Land Rover.
