Test Track To Be Re-Imagineered

Thirteen years ago car enthusiasts everywhere finally found an excuse to visit Walt Disney World without sacrificing too much face. Epcot unveiled a joint-venture ride, between GM and Walt Disney Imagineering, labeled Test Track – which attempted to fulfill every car buff’s mechanical fantasy by weaving through the trials and tribulations of a simulated test track.

Since Test Track originally opened, however, the ride has remained virtually unimproved. Needless to say, both car and testing technologies have improved dramatically since the late 1990s, particularly with regard to GM. And so, GM and Disney have come together, once more, to renew a long-term business relationship towards modernization and a newly-single brand focus.

Current plans call for the GM Test Track to close in April 2012 and reopen sometime in late 2012 as the Chevrolet Design Center. While former visitors of Test Track had to endure a bland vehicle of the masses, the new Chevy Design Center will allow attendees to have a say in the design process of current and future vehicles.

“As a global brand, Chevrolet is looking forward to welcoming guests from around the world to the re-imagined Test Track,” said GM Global Chief Marketing Officer Joel Ewanick. “The best of Disney and the best of Chevrolet will come together to bring guests an immersive experience in the design process of the vehicles they see on the road today and will see in the future.”

For now both companies are keeping hush about what kinds of improvements to expect, but don’t be surprised when our children start dreaming of Chevy products for years to come. After all, wasn’t that the original goal of Disney’s Experimental Prototype Community of tomorrow -- to showcase, test, and demonstrate technologies at the forefront of industry?
