Hennessey Venom GT Is Coming For Veyron's Record

There's no shortage of supercar marques with the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport in their sights. Bugatti's record had barely been made last summer before other potential contenders like SSC and Koenigsegg started waving their gauntlets around and hinting at an upcoming challenge. In a conversation with Jay Leno, John Hennessey, the mad man behind the 1,200-hp Lotus Exige known as the Venom GT, became the latest to publicly set a goal of beating the Veyron SS's 267.8 mph world record.

"The purpose of the car wasn't to beat the Veyron Super Sport's record, but we feel like the car's capable of doing it, so why not?" Hennessey commented to Leno. "It needs to come back to America, take it away from those French and German guys."

Hennessey lists the Venom GT's top speed at 275 mph on its website and clearly believes the car is capable of beating the Veyron Super Sport. The car boasts the same 1,200 hp as the Veyron Super Sport but comes in a package that weighs just 2,700 lbs. (the Veyron SS weighs around 4,000 lbs.). It achieves those 1,200 horses by bolting a twin turbo system onto a 6.2-liter V-8 engine built on a Chevy block.

While the top speed record would likely be the Venom's most lauded accomplishment, the car is also capable of competing with the Veyron on several other key performance measures. Hennessey lists 0-to-200 mph at 15.3 seconds, which blows the standard Veyron's 24.2 seconds out of the water. The car lists a 2.5-second 0-to-60 mph time, which is just a tick slower than the Veyron's 2.5-second to 62 mph time.

Hennessey plans to build just five Venom GTs a year at a price of $1 million each. Last month, Hennessey introduced the Venom GT Spyder, which costs $1.1 million, giving customers another way to enjoy the exotic car.

Hennessey hasn't announced when its world record attempt will come, but we look forward to watching it put that projected top speed to the test. You can watch the whole 12-minute Leno segment over at Jay Leno's Garage.

Wow, this sure is a fast car and has a nice price tag to come with it.
