Cheeky Double-Deckers Return To Square Mile

Back in 2005 the charismatic red double-decker buses of yore were removed from the streets, and simultaneously replaced by post-apocalypse reminiscent modern articulated buses (aka bendy buses). Indeed, anyone who has spent some time driving in a large city like London will tell you the world has surely ended if a 60 ft. bus has become a practical public transportation solution – nevermind those bi-articulated monsters which peak around 82 feet of double trailer insanity.

Fortunately, however, London’s current Mayor, Boris Johnson, committed to replace bendy buses with a transit vehicle Londoners would warmly welcome: an all-new, greatly improved hybrid diesel-electric red double-decker.

Designed as a tribute to the original Routemaster, this latest London double-decker incorporates lots of modern technology into an already practical design. Tests at the Millbrook Proving Ground indicated that the vehicle should emit less than half of the CO2 produced by current diesel buses and achieve more than twice the fuel economy of standard diesel buses – somewhere in the neighborhood of 23 mpg.

The first double-decker will start patrolling the streets of London in February, with seven more to follow by May and an eventual cap off at 12 total units.

Aside from a sleek modern design, the new Routemaster incorporates more windows, three doors, and two staircases for more efficient boarding and exit. And for those of us who prefer to get some exercise, a rear platform can be used for hop-on/hop-off commuters. Updated upholstery, reminiscent of the original design, also adorns the interior with LED lighting and signage.

Mayor Johnson epically proclaimed back in mid-December: “Christmas has arrived early in the form of this revolutionary new bus whose gleaming coat of red paint and sinuous curves will brighten the day of all who see it humming along our great city streets. It is the latest, greatest masterpiece of British engineering and design, and I am certain it will become a much loved and iconic vehicle akin to the legendary Routemaster from which it draws so much inspiration.”

Innovative engineering mixed with stylistic cues which tell the story of London’s cultural identity, this is the story of the new red double-decker. When it finally hits the streets in February, the new Routemaster is anticipated to be “the most environmentally friendly bus of its kind” and a significantly more practical solution for mass public transit. Here’s to another 60+ years of service…

This bus is actually very nice, the design is very different. I like it i wish we had some thing like that in Florida.
