Alfa Romeo 4C May Be Priced Under $45K

Most pricing estimates that we've seen have put the price of the upcoming Alfa Romeo 4C at between $55,000 and $70,000. However, those estimates have primarily been in euros or pounds, with US figures gained by simple pound/euro-to-dollar conversions. Last week, reports indicated that the US price of the sexy 4C could be significantly lower.

In a conversation with Inside Line, Alfa Romeo executives hinted that the price of the 4C could be $45,000 or less. The 4C will lead Alfa's return to the US market in 2013.

Frankly, we thought the 4C was intriguing at $60,000, but $45,000 is a downright deal. While the car will lose much of its carbon fiber and gain weight in production, Alfa still aims to keep it ridiculously light at under 2,000 lbs. With a 230-hp 1.8-liter turbo four under its hood, the 4C will accelerate to 60 mph in under 4.5 seconds, ensuring a very nice performance-price ratio.

A quick comparison reveals that the 4C could very quickly become the hottest car in its class. The 2012 Porsche Cayman starts at $51,900 and offers 265 horses and a 5.5-second 0-to-60 mph time. The 2011 Lotus Elise started around the same price as the Cayman and brought 189 hp and a 4.3-second 0-to-60 mph time.

In addition to offering comparable or better numbers for less money, the 4C should have better fuel economy given its extremely low weight (the Elise weighs over 2,500 lbs. and the Cayman over 2,900 lbs.). It's also arguably (not so arguably, in my opinion) the best looking of the three.

Unfortunately, the 4C will be a limited, low-volume car. Alfa Romeo plans to build about 18,000 models over the lifetime of the vehicle. On the bright side, reports suggest that Alfa will build several other variants of the 4C, including a convertible and a high-performance model.

Before sending the 4C to market in 2013, Alfa will debut the latest prototype version sometime next year.

This car is very nice looking i like it and i agree that it looks better than the Cayman and Lotus. I am very surprised that its only going to be $45k that is a great price.
