Kia GT May Spawn A Family

We've long heard that the sporty Kia GT concept introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show is likely to see production in one form or another. Now rumors are indicating that the GT may move well beyond a standalone model and may form the basis of a full family of sporty cars.

According to Inside Line, Kia is considering producing several different GT variants. In addition to the original four-door fastback, Kia is also thinking of a wagon and a two-door coupe. The two-door coupe seems like a natural addition, but I'm not sure that I can quite envision a GT wagon.

As the report goes, Kia envisions the line as an affordable alternative to fastbacks like the Audi A5 and A7. The public is already having a hard enough time thinking of Hyundai Equus in the same way as luxury automakers, it seems like a real stretch for Kia. On the other hand, the market seems like it could use more fastbacks, so regardless of who Kia actually competes with, a GT line wouldn't be a bad thing.

In concept form, the GT churned 390 horses out of a 3.3-liter V-6 turbo. An Auto Express report later indicated that Kia was considering cutting that engine down to a four-cylinder, perhaps with a hybrid boost system, in order to deliver better fuel economy. If Kia really wants to provide an alternative to the aforementioned Audis, however, it should probably stick with the V-6.

Way back when, rumor had it that Kia had a second sporty concept to show at the Detroit Auto Show. We haven't heard anything about that one, but won't rule it out until Kia's made its presentation at the show. Perhaps Kia will show a revised GT or the two-door coupe version.

I think this new line of GT for Kia could be really good for them. It will give people more options when they are shopping.
