Chevy Sonic Gets Sporty

Sporty isn't a word that naturally comes to mind when related to subcompact hatchbacks, but Chevy will soon launch what amounts to a sporty version of its Sonic subcompact. Chevy announced earlier this week that it will introduce the Sonic RS at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Chevy says that the 2013 Sonic RS will become the only vehicle in its segment to offer a turbocharged engine. That engine is a 1.4-liter Ecotec turbo that pushes the RS' output to 138 hp. The engine can be mated to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

In addition to the upgraded engine, the Spark RS will get an aggressive look inspired by the Aveo RS concept from the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. Exterior changes include new fog lamps, vertical air intakes, RS-specific grille, new rear spoiler and revised rear fascia. The RS rides on 17-inch five-spoke wheels and gets lowered and stiffened suspension. The RS trim will be available only on the five-door Sonic.

Inside, the car gets sport seats, sport steering wheel and shifter knob, aluminum pedals, and RS trim. The car features Chevy's MyLink infotainment system with seven-inch touchscreen display. The system integrates with the driver's smartphone, allowing for navigation and music functions (Pandora, Stitcher) to be used in the car.

"The Sonic RS remains true to the progressive spirit of the concept and brings an unmistakable attitude to the segment,” said John Mack, design director for the Sonic, in a statement. "From every angle and every touch point, it is a car that is unabashed in its performance statement – and one that drives Chevrolet’s performance legacy into its second century."

The Sonic RS will hit the market in late 2012. It will be available in Victory Red (pictured), Summit White, Cyber Gray Metallic and Black Granite Metallic. Chevy didn't announce pricing yet, but the standard 2012 Spark starts at $14,495.
