Rob Dyrdek Slays Sonic Kick Flip [Video]

As of Saturday, Chevrolet has demonstrated advertising supremacy in the subcompact field. Forget about strange animals being arranged into a Honda Fit or fancy endorsements from Leno’s Garage, no amount of marketing genius can possibly top Rob Dyrdek’s Chevy Sonic kick flip stunt. Although classically reserved for skateboards, a kick flip requires a full 360 degree lateral rotation in mid-flight, and Dyrdek unabashedly achieved this feat whilst strapped to the helm of a stunt-modified Chevy Sonic.

What started with Sonics being launched from high altitude has transformed into an ad campaign challenging consumers to a veritable match of one-upsmanship (aka the ‘Game of Firsts’) on letsdothis.com – where consumers can attempt wacky public challenges like Sidewalk Limbo or Urban Camouflage and earn points in the hopes of winning a brand new Chevy Sonic.

Since you’re all wondering: no, a 360 degree flying Sonic rotation is not listed as a recommended ‘First’.

“With his outrageous personality and his willingness to try any adventure once, Rob Dyrdek was the perfect match for the Sonic and our ‘Let’s Do This’ campaign,” said Kevin Mayer, director of Chevrolet advertising and sales promotion.

Dyrdek performed the Sonic kick flip before an eager audience at Six Flags Magic Mountain Saturday, also intended to be showcased on MTV’s Season 5 premier of Fantasy Factory. To make matters more exhilarating, Dyrdek soared over the world’s largest skateboard mid-flight, channeling a former stunt where he actually rolled around the Venice Boardwalk for Guinness recognition.

“A kick flip with a Chevy Sonic was a no-brainer,” proclaimed Dyrdek. “I am a Chevy guy from my ’69 Camaro to the Tahoe I drive every day. The Sonic’s power and sportiness made it the perfect vehicle for this awesome stunt.”

Most will recognize Dyrdek from one of his popular MTV programs like Fantasy Factory, Ridiculousness or Rob & Big, but few are probably aware of his dedication to various charities, innovative business schemes or professional skateboarding career. From building skate parks in the Rob Dyrdek Foundation to creating the first ever professional street skateboarding league, Dyrdek is a guy with incredible passion, ambition, and enough moxie to attempt a kick flip over an obstacle associated with a former world-record.

Hit the video below for high-flying Sonic action. And remember what we learned from Kevin Flynn in Tron: the only way to win the game [of firsts] is not to play. After all, firsts are called ‘firsts’ for a reason.
