Nissan To Launch New Pathfinder Concept And E-Van In Detroit

In a run-up to the holidays, automakers 'round the world were in a frenzy to make all their announcements before the holidays rendered the public indifferent to all but the biggest news headlines. Nissan teased its North American International Auto Show plans when it revealed that it will show a Pathfinder Concept and new electric van in Detroit. It also said that it will pick up where it left off in LA, serving show-goers food from an NV food truck.

Nissan has been absent from the Detroit Auto Show for the past two years, choosing to focus its attention on other major US shows around the same time (LA, New York and Chicago). This year it will be back and it will bring some buzz.

The Pathfinder concept is a preview of the next-generation Pathfinder, which will go on sale in the fall. Nissan hasn't detailed specifics, but a Car & Driver report suggests that the Pathfinder will follow other major SUVs in ditching its truck-based platform for a unibody construction shared with the Murano and upcoming Infiniti JX.

In addition to the new Pathfinder preview, Nissan will unveil an electric van concept. We'll call it an NV-EV, though all Nissan's said about it is that it is a preview of a future production van. Nissan suggests the van could be offered for both businesses and consumers.

While those two concepts will be interesting, the media will undoubtedly be more excited about the return of the NV food truck. At the LA Auto Show, Nissan teamed up with local food truck vendors The Grilled Cheese Truck and Coolhaus Truck to serve food on the show's media days. Nissan plans a similar team-up on Detroit's media days, but hasn't yet indicated what flavors the food truck will be serving, outside of saying it'll have "local Detroit flair."

It looks like Nissan is taking its return to Detroit seriously.
