Acura's Three Detroit Concepts Include NSX

Well, there have been years of rumors about two separate cars, but it's finally official: an Acura NSX successor is here. Or at least close to here--Acura confirmed rumors that it will debut an NSX successor at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show in January.

From what Acura has said, the rumors have been pretty spot on. In addition to confirming the Detroit debut, Acura told Inside Line that the NSX successor will use a mid-engined, V-6-based hybrid powertrain. Given that other information from previous reports has been quite accurate, we're pretty comfortable with the idea that the NSX will have a V-6 engine in the range of 3.5 liters along with two electric motors.

That configuration is the makeup of the recently announced SH-AWD system, which will also underpin the Acura RL successor. Neither the rumors or Acura's official information has provided a clue as to what the NSX's output will be, but the SH-AWD system has been described as providing the acceleration potential of a V-8 and the fuel economy of a four-cylinder.

The car will share similar proportions with the original NSX, but will get more aggressive styling. According to Inside Line, its front-end takes inspiration from the Acura concept used in the Avengers movie, confirming rumors that indicated the movie car would influence the new NSX.

The Detroit concept car will be an exterior only and won't include an interior. Since it's a sports car and not a luxury car, we aren't disappointed to see just the exterior.

In addition to the NSX concept, Acura will debut the ILX, a preview of a new model based on the Honda Civic sedan. That model will hit the market next spring, so the concept version should be near-production ready. It will have several powertrain options, including a small hybrid powertrain.

Acura will also unveil a prototype version of the 2013 RDX SUV in Detroit, which should also launch next spring.
