Smart Goes Urban Commando, For-Us

Smart has just released images of the company’s latest concept, an urban assault-type vehicle set to debut at next month’s Detroit Auto Show. Although a bit humorous in comparison with other modern pickup trucks, the Smart For-Us is targeted for young folks looking for a quasi-practical loading vehicle capable of handling at least two full-sized bicycles.

But, don’t get the wrong idea. The For-Us will be small, really small.

With exterior dimensions best measured in millimeters, this Smart Concept “could almost go unnoticed on the loading area of a typical pickup.” Outrageous! As usual, the company’s goal was to translate functional loading uses into the reality of 21st century urban driving – where traditional half ton pickups are the exact opposite of practical.

That dedication to modern functionality will also carry over into the vehicle’s mechanical system. The For-Us concept will derive power from a 75 horsepower, 98-lb.ft. of torque electric motor which produces zero emissions. No word yet on range or anticipated charge times, but those savvy with mathematical projections might be able to translate the vehicle’s lithium-ion battery capacity of 17.6 kWh into a meaningful guess.

Smart CEO Dr. Annette Winkler recently stated: “We at Smart love pick-ups – if they are small on the outside, large on the inside, very safe and extremely comfortable. With the Smart For-Us a petrol station is no longer required!”

Since the goal of the For-Us is to promote flexibility in the city, Smart aimed to fit two electric bikes in the rear cargo area – formerly known as bed. At maximum capacity the For-Us can fit two adults and at least two bikes in the rear. But potential owners won’t want just any bikes. The For-Us is electric bike ready, with a docking station to keep mounted bikes charged at all times.

So what if the For-Us concept conjures images of Hulk Hogan, as Shep Ramsey, in the interstellar nanny flick Suburban Commando. Most people can probably agree that the For-Us is a bit wacky, and perhaps bizarre. Isn’t that the point of a concept, though? The For-Us pushes the boundaries of conventional mini-car applications and makes us question our own interpretations of full sized pickups. If we didn’t believe cutting through the local city park for an electric bike-assisted shortcut was a reasonable alternative before, we sure might consider it now.

I like the concept, but i don't think many people are going to want to buy this. People use pick ups for heavy duty stuff, and the for-us just doesn't have the capability. But i guess for people who love to ride bicycles this would be a great truck for them.
