Hennessey Venom GT Gets Convertible

The Hennessey Venom GT has stood as the most interesting supercar-by-tuner of the past several years. This supercar is what happens when car guys get a wee bit shop drunk and start coming up with outlandish ideas. In this case, the outlandish idea is fitting a tiny Lotus Exige with a massive, twin-turbo LS9 V-8 engine. That's 1,200 hp packed into 2,640 lbs.

The Venom GT is admittedly pretty exciting, but what good is an ultra-powerful, quirky two-seater if you can't take the top off? That's why there's now a Venom GT Spyder.

Hennessey announced that it will begin offering a Spyder option for the 2013 model year. Now, when you're a small tuner building a million-dollar supercar, "model year" really means "handful of vehicles that we build for that year". In this case, that handful is five. Customers will be able to specify between fixed hardtop and removable hardtop when putting their orders in.

Orders are open now and deliveries will begin next summer. Two people have already reserved their 2013 Venom GTs, so you might want to hurry if you intend to buy one.

The Venom GT Spyder starts at $1.1 million, an increase of $150,000 over the price of the hardtop.

No word on the performance specs of the convertible version, but given the hardtop's exceptional numbers, they're bound to be pretty awesome. Hennessey advertises a 2.5-second 0 to 60 mph time and a top speed around 275 mph. If accurate, that top speed is about 7 mph greater than the current world-record-holding Bugatti Veyron Super Sport.

The Venom GT is one awesome car and the Venom GT Spyder is sure to be one awesome convertible.

CEO Don Goldman describes it in detail: "With the hardtop in place, the Venom GT offers a very visceral, raw, driving experience. With the hardtop removed, the wind and the growl of the twin turbo V8 will offer our clients an even greater driving sensation."
