Honda Details Possible-NSX Hybrid And Electric Powertrains Of The Future

Honda came to this year's Tokyo Motor Show with a clear focus on green technology. In addition to its electric Small Sports EV Concept and Advanced Cruiser-X plug-in hybrid concept, Honda detailed a raft of new green powertrains that it calls Earth Dreams Technology. Though a somewhat spacey, new age-y name, the technologies promise to deliver superior electric and hybrid driving and may preview the upcoming NSX successor's motivation.

The Earth Dreams platform will be integral to Honda's ambitious plans for the next few years. Honda aims to offer industry-leading fuel economy within every vehicle class within three years' time. It also plans to cut fleet emissions by 30 percent by 2020.

Honda plans an all-electric powertrain that improves upon ranges of current-generation mainstream EVs, offering up to 123 miles of drive per battery charge. That powertrain will also offer a short charging time under three hours from a 240-volt system, beating out the 2012 Ford Focus Electric's 240-volt charging time, which Ford puts between three and four hours.

Just as interesting as the electric platform, the SH-AWD is a hybrid system that provides all-wheel drive. It uses a 3.5-liter V-6 engine up front and a 20 kW at each of the rear wheels to deliver the quickness of a V-8 powertrain with the fuel efficiency of an inline four-cylinder engine.

The fact that the powertrain features a 3.5-liter V-6 and offers V-8-level acceleration foreshadows potential application in the upcoming NSX successor. Past rumors have pointed to hybrid powertrain with 3.5-liter V-6 and two motors, and, as Honda's flagship, the NSX should pack V-8-type acceleration. We may find out for sure at the Detroit Auto Show.

The Earth Dreams umbrella also includes CVT transmissions and gas engines with direct injection technology.
