Nissan To Commission More High-Performance Nismo Models

If the recent Juke R tells us one thing, it's that Nissan is itching for some performance models. You have to be just a little bored to come up with something as off-the-wall as a 530-hp small crossover.

Luckily for Nissan and its tuning wing Nismo, it won't be bored for long. The Juke Nismo Concept--a more realistic take on a high performance Juke--is the beginning of an increased role for Nismo. Nissan announced at the Tokyo Motor Show that it plans to start commissioning more Nismo models.

Nismo has traditionally been used primarily for Nissan's motor sports efforts and select tunes on high-end models like the Z series. But Nissan wants Nismo to get more active.

In early 2013, Nismo will move to a new global headquarters in Yokohama, Japan and will expand its line of performance models, parts and accessories. The new headquarters will consolidate Nismo's racing and road activities under one roof and will include a heritage display of Nismo cars and a store for performance parts.

"The time is now right to let ordinary drivers experience what our racing drivers enjoy every time they head out onto the track. We aim to bring Nismo's passion and focus on driving excitement to mainstream models, and the Juke Nismo Concept shows what we can do," Nissan CEO and President Carlos Ghosn explained in a statement.

Nissan hasn't indicated if the Juke Nismo is scheduled for production, but given its recent focus on a high performance--first with the video series on the Juke R and now with the Juke Nismo--we'd be surprised if it doesn't green light it. And if that concept is any indication of what Nismo has in store, we're glad to see it expanding.
