Toyota GT 86 Production Version Comes Alive (Video)

Newspapers, blogs, community forums, magazines, and the like have exploded with buzz surrounding Subaru and Toyota’s joint-venture RWD sports coupe. At the Los Angeles Auto Show, just recently, fan excitement reached some kind of boiling point as Subaru officially revealed an actual production version BRZ in the flesh…or shall we say metal. Now, right before the Tokyo show, Toyota has fallen suit with an official reveal of the company’s take: the GT 86 sports car. Devout followers will note that Toyota has chosen to drop the concept version’s name, the FT 86, for a slightly altered moniker.

The model, as depicted above, will launch throughout Europe and Japan, but is expected to appear in North America under a Scion FR-S badge. While the car looks quite aggressive in stance, the vehicle’s starting engine output appears less than exciting – 197 horsepower and 151 lb.-ft. of torque derived from Subaru’s new horizontally opposed 2.0-liter flat-four boxer engine.

Although hard to see from the pictures, the GT 86 will be one of the smallest four-seat sports cars on the market. Dimensions measure 167 in. long, 50.6 in. tall, and 101 in. wide. Despite a somewhat uninspiring engine for a sports car, drivers can still expect great road feel and handling. The vehicle is offered with a 6-speed manual transmission, 17-inch wheels, and a nearly perfect 53:47 front-to-rear weight distribution.

After Tokyo, the GT 86 looks to go on sale in the UK by the summer of 2012. Until then, we’ll be waiting eagerly for details, specs, and enthusiast tinkering plans. The true glory of the GT 86 will probably look something like the Mazda RX7s and Toyota Supras of yesterday – marked by tweaking and mods which make The Fast and Furious franchise look like a trip to your grandparent’s derby party.

Pictures not enough? Check out Toyota’s official GT 86 video for further spine-tingling adrenaline.
