At the upcoming North American International Auto Show, spectators will be treated to an array of sights and sounds from automakers around the world. The Mercedes-Benz exhibit, however, won’t have flashy color schemes, techno musaque, or gimmicky advertising signs. Instead, this particular automaker will showcase a sophisticated fleet of new vehicles – beyond the need for marketing puffery. A centerpiece of the Mercedes-Benz lineup will almost certainly be the company’s newly-redesigned 2012 SL.

For 2012, consumers will be delighted to hear about three main improvements (in addition to scores of already magnificent features). Other than aesthetic changes, the most significant change will be a 20% more rigid chassis and reduction in nearly 310 pounds of weight over the outgoing model. Weight and rigidity improvements stem from the vehicle’s use of aluminum-focused construction and hydro formed, chilled cast longitudinal members.

The company claims these changes will amount to a 30 percent increase in fuel efficiency.

The 2012 SL will also feature a new mechanical system called Magic Vision Control – an exciting label for what is essentially a windshield wiper improvement. The Magic Vision Control integrates the roadster’s spraying washer nozzles into each windshield wiper blade for the purpose of avoiding those messy interior sprays which usually occur while the top is down. So now South Beach cruisers can avoid that embarrassing wiper fluid-in-the-face moment at stoplights.

The 2012 SL will also feature a new front bass sound system which relies on two subwoofers mounted to the vehicle’s driver and passenger foot wells. Nothing says free foot massages like a 2012 SL.

Gadgetry aside, Mercedes-Benz isn’t hiding too many details with their intended camouflage. The vehicle appears sharp, aggressive, and capable. All features that match the company’s engine options, which include a 3.5-liter V6 with 302 horsepower and 272 lb-ft. of torque or a 4.6-liter V8 which produces 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque.

Will the company wait until the North American Auto Show for the SL’s final debut? At this rate we’ll have full details far before then, but even so an SL displayed on the showroom floor will feel like an original debut. Few vehicles have the air of quality, constitution, or sophisticated scent found in any new Mercedes-Benz. Indeed, no matter how many times we see or experience a new SL…it feels like the first time.
