Mysterious 2014 Corvette Gets Rendered

Few cars have been more buzzed about than the C7 Corvette. Rumors and statements from GM execs have long indicated that the C7 could be the Corvette that changes the face of Corvettes as we know them. Everything from a mid-engined layout to small turbo engines have run through the rumor mill at one point or another. With all this hype, we just want to see the damn car and separate fact from fiction.

The official debut remains more than a year off, and the spy photographers are all crickets, but one blog has put together what it firmly believes is the spitting image of the next-generation Corvette.

Jalopnik spent time coaxing as much information as possible out of several GM sources. When it felt that it had everything it needed, the blog sat down with a designer and created a rendering of the next-generation Corvette ZR1.

I won't copy/paste Jalopnik's heavily watermarked renderings, but you can check out several different angles on its original post.

I find myself rooting pretty heavily against this design. Few things have been sacred when it comes to Corvette redesigns--the headlights have changed markedly over the years, many of the lines and angles have been rearranged, etc.--but a few things that have always defined the car to me are the large, swooping hood, curvaceous profile and double-circle taillights. Those features let you know that a Corvette is coming from hundreds of feet away.

The 2014 Corvette by Jalopnik loses pretty much all of these defining features. The hood is still curvy, but it's sculpted to the point of business and loses almost all its "Corvetteness." The profile is okay, but the cabin is pushed so far back that the car changes the Vette's distinctive look.

Worst of all, the taillights completely obliterate one of the most timeless aspects of the Corvette. Instead of the familiar circular lights, the rendering shows a set of very un-Vette-like square taillights that are influenced by the Camaro. The quad exhaust also looks a little out of place on the design.

GM mentioned the rendering on Facebook, issuing a soft denial: "Today Jalopnik posted renderings of what they think the next-gen Corvette will look like. We appreciate their enthusiasm but you'll have to wait a little longer to see what the next Corvette will actually look like."

I would have preferred a full denial in the vein of "HA! Not even close!" because this thing looks pretty miserable.

I hope Jalopnik is misinformed. After all the hype, this concept doesn't look much different than the current Corvette.
