Ferrari Owners To Get Dibs On Special Editions

When you build cars as desired and exotic as the 599 GTO, sometimes even the most loyal among your customer base can't get their hands on one. Ferrari is currently considering a move that would ensure that its best customers get the first look at its latest models.

Ferrari is planning to start an owners club for its biggest customers. Members of the club will automatically get first right of refusal when it comes to special edition models, ensuring that Ferrari's most prized collectors are first in line for the latest models.

"I do not want our faithful collectors to miss the opportunity to buy one of our special series," Ferrari CEO Luca Cordero di Montezemolo explained when talking to Automotive News Europe.

The move will definitely help to ensure that Ferrari aficionados don't miss the opportunity to get special editions, but it won't necessarily guarantee they'll have access. Ferrari has not decided on specific criteria for entry into the club, but is considering offering it to owners that have five or more Ferrari models in their personal collections. According to company estimates, that would be about 300 people.

While a much smaller group than the general consumer population, that 300 is still well more than the number of some limited edition models. For instance, the 599 SA Aperta, one of the latest models that seems to have influenced Ferrari's owner club plans, was produced in a volume of just 80 models. Those 80 models sold out within about a month, and some established Ferrari collectors were displeased at having missed out.

While giving a select 300 owners first rights on the 599 SA Aperta may have helped put the car into the hands of all the most dedicated collectors that desired it, there was still only about one SA Aperta for every four five-model collectors. In other words, some loyal Ferrari customers might have been left out either way.
